An agent provocateur (an ‘inciting person’ in French) is a person employed by the police or other entity to act undercover to entice or provoke another person to commit an illegal act. More generally, the term refers to someone looking to discredit or harm another by provoking them into doing something wrong or rash.

However, we all know Agent Provocateur as the incredibly sexy and luxurious lingerie, perfume and toy line by Vivienne Westwood’s son , Joseph Corré and his now ex-wife Serena Rees. The first shop was opened on London’s Broadwick Street in Soho in 1994 with aims of selling high-end lingerie. The company is known for producing extremely sexy, racy, hot and controversial adverts, such as the famous ads featuring Kylie Minogue in 2001.The advert, which was shown only in cinemas, helped push the envelope on sexual innuendo in advertising media and helped demonstrate the power of internet based viral marketing.

communication of values using shop windows, cinema advertising, catalogues and events which all attracted massive national and international media coverage has firmly secured Agent Provocateur as the only truly credible lingerie brand on the fashion map and spawned the explosion of lingerie into the fashion world. Agent Provocateur has gone on to design and produce complementary products including books, shoes, jewelery and a very successful house of fragrances and beauty products which is now sold in over 65 countries worldwide.
